installation specifications for corrugated compensators (expansion joints)

Author:Henan Shengshi New Material Technology Co., Ltd. Click: Time:2025-06-18 16:26:16

Pre-installation Preparations

  1. Verify that the model, specifications, etc., comply with design requirements, including the compensator's material, working pressure, temperature, etc.
  2. Ensure the compensator’s appearance is free from damage or defects; conduct pressure tests if necessary to verify sealing and pressure-bearing performance.
  3. Clean the pipeline surface to ensure a tight fit with the compensator and prevent leakage.
  4. Inspect the pipe system and supports: main fixed supports, secondary fixed supports, and guide supports should have sufficient strength, and guide supports must have adequate guiding capability.

Installation Process

  1. Determine the installation location, typically at expansion points, elbows, diameter changes, etc., in the pipeline system.
  2. Install according to the manufacturer’s drawings and instructions, ensuring the compensator’s axial and radial positions are correct, and the connection to the pipeline system is tight and leak-free.
  3. For compensators with inner sleeves or flow guide tubes, align the inner sleeve or flow guide tube with the medium flow direction; the hinge rotation plane of hinge-type compensators should match the displacement rotation plane.
  4. For compensators requiring pre-deformation (e.g., 'cold tensioning'), remove the auxiliary components used for pre-deformation only after the pipeline installation is complete.
  5. Strictly prohibit using the compensator’s deformation to adjust pipeline installation errors, as this may affect its normal function, reduce service life, and increase loads on the pipe system.
  6. During installation, maintain coaxiality between the two interfaces or flanges, with a coaxiality error of ±5mm.
  7. Avoid welding slag splashing onto the bellows surface to prevent mechanical damage to the shell.

Post-installation Inspection and Maintenance

  1. After installation, conduct leakage tests and working pressure tests to ensure performance and safety meet requirements.
  2. Remove the auxiliary positioning components and fasteners used for installation and transportation as soon as possible, and adjust the limit devices to the specified positions as per design requirements.
  3. Ensure all moving components of the compensator can move freely, without being stuck or restricted by external components.
  4. During hydrostatic testing, reinforce the fixed pipe supports at the ends of the pipeline with compensators. For compensators used in gas media and their connected pipelines, consider adding temporary supports when filling with water. The chloride ion content in the hydrostatic test water/cleaning solution should not exceed 25 PPM.
  5. After the hydrostatic test, drain the water from the bellows shell as soon as possible and quickly dry the inner surface of the shell.
  6. Thermal insulation materials in contact with the compensator’s bellows should be free of chloride ions.
  7. Regularly inspect the condition and performance of the compensator, and perform necessary maintenance and repairs.
